JJ Redick, the self-described “sicko” and “neurotic” head coach of the Lakers, has confirmed a story that only strengthens his image as a basketball fanatic.
Shortly before the Lakers improved to 3-0 on Saturday, former Warriors player Baron Davis noted that he spotted Redick at a car wash, engrossed in reviewing game footage on his laptop. Following the Lakers’ victory over the Kings, Redick explained that the schedule of consecutive games on Friday and Saturday necessitated his decision to work at the car wash.
“It was due to the back-to-back games,” Redick stated, according to ESPN. “I spent last night and this morning finishing up analysis from the previous game and preparing for today. This morning was no different.”
The player-turned-coach acknowledged that this behavior is not “normal” for him.
“It’s a very efficient use of time. I watch a lot of film, but that’s not typical. Thanks, Baron,” he noted.
Redick’s dedication to mastering game details has greatly benefited the Lakers thus far. With consecutive wins against the Suns and Kings, the Lakers (3-0) have achieved their best start since the 2010-11 season. Additionally, Redick’s unbeaten start ranks him as the most successful debut coach for the Lakers since Bill Sharman in 1971-72.
Remarkably, the Lakers came back from significant deficits (22 against the Suns, 15 against the Kings) to secure wins over two Western Conference rivals, a notable improvement from the previous year when they frequently faltered in closing out games.
After three straight wins at home, the Lakers will embark on an 11-day road trip featuring five games against the Suns, Cavaliers, Raptors, Pistons, and Grizzlies, starting with a matchup against the Suns on Monday night.
