The New York Rangers and forward Vincent Trocheck are facing criticism due to the controversial Halloween costume the player selected, which has attracted significant negative attention.
The Rangers are having a strong season in 2024 and are seen as potential Stanley Cup contenders, supported by notable players such as Alexis Lafreniere, Igor Shesterkin, Artemi Panarin, and Trocheck. Currently sitting second in the Metropolitan Division, the team is feeling positive a short way into the season.
As Halloween brings a spirit of scares and fun, many enjoy watching films or donning outrageous costumes; however, some cross the line. Trocheck seemingly missed that memo, as he was spotted on Instagram posing with his partner in costumes resembling the infamous Menendez Brothers.
Although the post has been removed, it initially showcased Trocheck and his partner mimicking the brothers while holding NERF guns to represent firearms—a move deemed disrespectful to the Menendez family and the city itself.
The Menendez Brothers’ case was sensationalized globally due to its shocking details. Notably, after committing their crime, they were seen enjoying a New York Knicks game from courtside seats at Madison Square Garden, a moment that was captured in a historic photograph featuring Knicks point guard Mark Jackson just hours later.
The New York Rangers and Trocheck must act swiftly to mitigate the backlash, as this costume choice not only lacks taste but also glorifies criminals in an unsettling way. It’s crucial for New York to address the situation effectively to prevent Trocheck from incurring the ire of the city’s passionate community.
