NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs are exploring options to trade recently acquired defenseman Matt Benning.
With Timothy Liljegren’s time in Toronto coming to an end, following a trade to the San Jose Sharks due to his dissatisfaction, it marks a new beginning for both Liljegren and the Maple Leafs.
The team brought in Matt Benning, a dependable third-pairing defenseman who could serve as valuable insurance for Brad Treliving and Craig Berube. However, there are rumors that the Maple Leafs might trade Benning in exchange for draft picks or salary cap relief, raising doubts about his future with the team.
According to Friedman, it’s likely that Benning won’t remain with the Maple Leafs, as he acknowledged that the organization is fielding offers for him: “I think it is very possible that the Leafs will try and flip (Matt) Benning.” Given that Toronto already boasts a strong group of defensemen and Jani Hakanpaa’s upcoming return, it will be challenging for Benning to secure ice time. If the Maple Leafs can identify a trade partner, it shouldn’t be difficult to obtain something in return for the 30-year-old, even if the return isn’t substantial. Offloading his contract could yield a mid-tier prospect or draft picks, which should not be underestimated.
Currently, Toronto’s defense is largely solidified, with their top four locked in for the next few years. This leaves only two available spots, and with Simon Benoit, Conor Timmins, and Hakanpaa all vying for those spots, Benning may struggle to get playing time this season. Hakanpaa, in particular, is expected to draw attention once he returns, and if he performs as anticipated, he is unlikely to be benched, leaving just one spot open.
In light of the limited space for Benning on the roster and the Maple Leafs’ urgency to obtain either draft picks or cap space, it appears logical for the team to move on from him. It wouldn’t be surprising to see another trade occur soon, potentially involving Benning or other candidates.
