Changes are anticipated in the goaltending situation for the Montreal Canadiens. Cayden Primeau is currently falling short of expectations, with this season’s save percentage at 0.861 (0.890 for his career) and a goals-against average of 4.38.
One can speculate that the Canadiens might have secured more victories with a goalie like Jakub Dobes or Connor Hughes in the net.
Although Primeau has the potential to perform well, his unpredictable play from game to game is not ideal for a team that requires consistency from its goaltender.
Could waivers be in Primeau’s future? Journalist Stu Cowan shares his perspective on the matter.
“If Cayden Primeau fails to improve, what steps should the Canadiens take? Personally, I believe we’ve reached a point where, if this continues, putting him on waivers is the next move. For Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton, if they lose him, they lose him!”
Do you share his viewpoint?
Zachary Hickling has reported that Cowan elaborated further:
“Goalies must elevate their performance. Sam Montembeault needs to do better as well, and if Cayden Primeau doesn’t show improvement, what should the Canadiens do? I think we’ve reached a stage where, if his struggles continue, he should be placed on waivers—if they lose him, that’s just how it is. We can’t keep rotating between three goalies. They probably should have waived Primeau last season. If he ends up in Laval, that’s fine; he can get plenty of playtime. If he’s lost, he’s lost. They should stick with Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault.
This team would be in a better position right now with just Montembeault and Allen.”

Those are firm statements, but it’s hard to dispute their validity.
If the decision were yours, would you consider giving a chance to Connor Hughes or Jakub Dobes? Especially if Primeau doesn’t improve soon, it seems probable that the Canadiens’ management will take action, and a waiver move could be a likely scenario for some.
