The Buffalo Bills exited Week 9 with a significant victory against the Miami Dolphins, securing a four-game lead in the AFC East and the second seed in the conference, but unfortunately added several new injuries to their roster.
On Monday, head coach Sean McDermott announced that defensive end Dawuane Smoot would be placed on the Injured Reserve (IR) list after leaving Sunday’s game with a wrist injury. Initially listed as questionable, Smoot, who is on a one-year contract, went to the locker room for x-rays and was later ruled out for the game.
McDermott expressed hope that Smoot might return before the season ends, but cautioned that the full extent of the injury won’t be known until after surgery, advising not to “quote me on that.”
Another injury involved rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman, who hurt his wrist while trying to catch a pass from Josh Allen in the fourth quarter. Former Bills safety Jordan Poyer collided with Coleman, causing his helmet to hit the wide receiver’s arm. Coleman left the game for x-rays, and on Monday, McDermott mentioned he would undergo additional tests; the duration of Coleman’s absence is still uncertain, although McDermott is “holding out hope” it won’t be significant.
Other Bills players who had to leave for evaluations included cornerback Taron Johnson, who may have suffered a lower back injury, defensive end Casey Toohill with a knee issue, linebacker Dorian Williams who needed a concussion evaluation, and cornerback Kaiir Elam, who had a shoulder injury that required realignment. All returned to play, but except for Williams, are likely to appear on this week’s injury report.
Quarterback Josh Allen also showed signs of a possible injury when he was seen shaking his throwing hand after it collided with a Miami defender in the first half. However, he did not seek medical attention, played the entire game, and whether he will be listed with an injury remains to be seen on Wednesday.
During his regular Monday press conference, McDermott also stated that Amari Cooper, Christian Benford, and Reggie Gilliam, all of whom missed Sunday’s matchup, are now considered day-to-day as the team evaluates their injuries.
