In recent weeks, Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman has been becoming a key player in quarterback Josh Allen’s passing game. On Sunday, Coleman was subject to a hard hit from former Pro Bowler Jordan Poyer, resulting in a penalty for unnecessary roughness, even though Coleman had a relatively quiet statistical performance.
The main concern following the hit is Coleman’s health, as he appeared to sustain a wrist injury. With tests ongoing, his potential status for the future could influence general manager Brandon Beane’s decisions ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. Fortunately for Buffalo, they have other offensive options available, including the consistently dependable Khalil Shakir and newly-acquired Amari Cooper, who was sidelined this week due to injury. Should Coleman be unable to play against the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday, Cooper would likely take on a more significant role in the offense.
Cooper possesses the size and route-running skills needed to act as a primary outside threat, which has been his main position in the limited snaps he has taken with the Bills so far. According to PFF, he has lined up out wide for over 84% of his snaps.
If Coleman is out, it might also lead to an increase in two-tight end formations. Both Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox see considerable playtime, and Buffalo has had notable success in the run game when utilizing heavier sets.
Coleman’s injury is still under assessment; it could turn out to be minor. Even if he ends up sidelined for an extended period, it’s unlikely that Beane will seek to acquire another wide receiver, as there are enough offensive players to keep the momentum going. With a solid 7-2 record and a comfortable lead in the AFC East, there’s no pressing need to pursue another playmaker.
