Rumors suggest that the Montreal Canadiens are considering trading defenseman Arber Xhekaj. The team is reportedly looking to make a move, as Xhekaj finds himself one of many players competing for playing time in Montreal’s defensive lineup.
Known for his aggressive defensive style, Xhekaj could be valuable to a team seeking better goal prevention. Currently, the Canadiens hold a record of 4-7-1 this season.
Former player Georges Laraque has advised that it would be sensible for both the player and the team to separate. Xhekaj’s role with the Canadiens has been limited, averaging just under 15 minutes of ice time per game. Laraque remarked, “If they don’t play him every game, what’s the point of keeping him? Other teams are interested and could integrate him into their lineup more regularly.” Notably, he has not registered a point this season.
In his third year in the NHL, Xhekaj has spent his entire career with the Canadiens, accumulating 23 points over more than 100 games. The defenseman, nicknamed “The Sheriff” for his intense and physical style, is no stranger to the penalty box, amassing 194 penalty minutes. He’s also known for stepping up for his teammates, as seen in a recent game against Pittsburgh.
Should Montreal decide to trade him, several teams could be interested in acquiring Xhekaj to strengthen their defense. His plus-minus statistics have improved over the years, indicating he can also contribute offensively when needed.
The Canadiens are scheduled to face the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.
