Standing at 6-foot-6, Adam Edstrom might seem hard to overlook, yet that was the case during the offseason for the New York Rangers forward. However, in September, he made a noticeable impact starting from the Rangers’ rookie camp through training camp and into the preseason. This attention helped him surpass 6-foot-9 Matt Rempe, a player who had previously outshone him.
Now into the NHL season, Edstrom has participated in all 11 of the Rangers’ games, contributing to their strong 8-2-1 record, while Rempe has been assigned to Hartford in the American Hockey League after only three games with the Rangers.
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette explained Edstrom’s success, stating, “I think it’s just more of a complete game. He’s played well defensively, is physically imposing, has good skating ability, and has also generated offense even if it doesn’t always reflect in his stats.”
Edstrom netted his first goal of the season during a 5-2 victory against the New York Islanders, benefiting from a deflection. He also recorded one assist and ranks fourth on the team with 19 hits, placing second in hits per 60 minutes, trailing only Will Cuylle.
Last season, Edstrom scored two goals in 11 games and added more during the preseason. As Laviolette mentioned, he’s capable of providing offense. “He can beat defensemen to the outside and drive to the net,” he said, noting Edstrom’s previous performance in rookie games and the preseason.
Edstrom seized an opportunity when Jimmy Vesey sustained a lower-body injury during training camp, which likely secured him a spot on the roster. With Vesey on LTIR and inactive for the first ten games, Edstrom claimed a permanent position on the fourth line alongside center Sam Carrick, while Rempe and Jonny Brodzinski competed for the right wing spot. When Vesey returned Sunday, it was no surprise that Edstrom remained in the lineup and Rempe was demoted.
Laviolette praised Edstrom’s versatility across all areas of play, while acknowledging Brodzinski’s experience and Rempe’s push from the minors. For now, Edstrom has earned a regular slot in the Rangers lineup and is taking full advantage of that opportunity.
