We’ve just received a significant update regarding Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook from analyst Simon Boisvert, also known as “the snake.”
Boisvert believes that Newhook’s chances of becoming a reliable second-line player in the NHL are over, as he feels he has seen enough to make that call. According to him, Newhook will soon be replaced on the Canadiens’ second line by a more capable player, especially with prospects like Ivan Demidov, Patrik Laine, and Michael Hage expected to join Martin St-Louis’ roster in the near future.
Is Newhook’s time as a top-6 NHL player finished? After Kent Hughes traded three assets, including a first-round and a second-round pick, to acquire him, this is certainly disappointing news.
Furthermore, Boisvert asserts that Newhook is ideally suited as a third-line forward but lacks the essential traits of a good third-liner—such as versatility, physicality, disruptive forechecking, and grit.
I was not aware of how much Newhook has been struggling this season, as he has only managed two points (two goals and zero assists) in 13 games, even while playing in the Canadiens’ top-6 since the season began. He has also received ample power-play chances and ice time.
At 23 years old, Newhook carries an annual salary of $2.9 million through 2027. We can only hope he can improve his performance and prove Boisvert wrong, although the outlook seems bleak at this time. What would you do if you were in charge of Alex Newhook’s future?
