We recently came across an intriguing remark on BPM Sports about Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau. Former Montreal Canadiens player and current host Georges Laraque stated that management never intended for Montembeault and Primeau to serve as the goaltending duo this season. Interesting indeed!
This indicates that another goaltender was likely part of their original plans. Could it have been Yaroslav Askarov or possibly a still-available option like John Gibson? It’s unclear, but Laraque believes that Montembeault and Primeau were not the pair envisioned for the Canadiens this year.
Laraque emphasizes that the Canadiens didn’t plan for their goaltending tandem to consist of Montembeault and Primeau. Here’s the relevant excerpt:
“The Canadiens made a mistake trading Jake Allen for a 3rd-round pick. We’d welcome him back today to create a duo with Samuel Montembeault. It’s easy to judge after the fact. When they had three goalies on the roster, they opted to keep Primeau after waivers, leading to Allen’s trade.
The real error was that if they chose to do that, they should have secured a reliable tandem for this season. I’m sure in the Canadiens’ view, Primeau and Montembeault weren’t the intended goaltending pair. Relying on them in net doesn’t seem like a recipe for success.”
– Georges Laraque
This is certainly thought-provoking. If Laraque’s view holds true, we might see a new goaltender join the Montreal Canadiens soon, whether from within the organization or externally. Personally, I have faith in Samuel Montembeault, but I admit Cayden Primeau’s inconsistency raises some concerns. After all, it’s known that Hughes attempted to bring Marc-Andre Fleury aboard this summer.
