Rick Pitino received an enthusiastic welcome during his surprise return to Rupp Arena, expressing his joy at being back and showing support for first-year Kentucky coach and former captain Mark Pope during the Big Blue Madness public practice on Friday night.
Pitino, who led Kentucky to the 1996 national championship after recovering from NCAA sanctions, faced backlash from the passionate fan base for later coaching rival Louisville. He made an appearance towards the end of the event and was met with a standing ovation. Currently coaching at St. John’s, Pitino has been an ardent supporter of Pope, who took over the prestigious program in April after Hall of Famer John Calipari moved to Arkansas.
As former Wildcat legends surrounded Pope, Pitino walked onto the Rupp Arena floor while a video tribute was shown. He expressed his desire to “go back to Camelot” one last time and thanked the fans who had brought him joy during his eight years there.
“And now we get to cheer for someone who embodies the Kentucky name,” Pitino said, wearing a blue zip-up jacket adorned with a white UK logo. “He’s the most selfless, humble young man I’ve coached. He exemplifies what Kentucky basketball represents… He’s going to guide you to greatness in every possible way. Thank you all very much.”
