Duke football has posted a 3-1 record in their last four games against the other two Triangle teams in the ACC. This includes two victories in Manny Diaz’s first year, starting with a close 21-20 win at home against the UNC Tar Heels (5-4, 2-3 ACC) in late September, followed by a 29-19 win over NC State (5-5, 2-4 ACC) in Raleigh.
The clever Duke football social media team is making sure that their rivals remember their recent struggles do not represent the upward trajectory Duke has experienced in recent years under former head coach Mike Elko and currently under Diaz. On Monday, the team’s official Twitter account highlighted their victory over NC State with a post that read “Undefeated against the Triangle,” complete with a Blue Devil emoji.
After their victory at Carter-Finley Stadium, Duke’s account humorously challenged the “Typical NC State fan” account, which had questioned the loyalty of Duke supporters by asking for proof of their degrees. In response, Duke created a playful honorary certificate proclaiming a “Bachelor of Arts in Butt Kicking” awarded for their performance there.
Shortly after, they mocked the NC State mascot with a “So Tuff” message, paired with a dented logo of the Wolfpack. However, compared to their treatment of UNC, NC State appeared to receive a milder response.
Following their win over the Tar Heels, Duke’s account humorously pretended to report UNC for dishonesty and flooded their feed with Victory Bell celebration videos for several days.
As for bowl eligibility, either UNC or NC State will secure their sixth win when they face each other in Chapel Hill, while Duke has already been bowl-eligible for nearly a month now. With their 29-19 victory, Duke has outscored NC State 160-101 over their last five encounters, improving their record against the Wolfpack to 4-1 during that period. In the last two seasons, Duke boasts a 3-1 record against both State and UNC, challenging the notion that Duke football is a laughing matter.
The Blue Devils (7-3, 3-3 ACC), who experienced losses in three of their previous four games before their recent win over NC State, are currently on a bye week. They will host the Virginia Tech Hokies (5-5, 3-3 ACC) on Senior Day at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 23 (ACC Network).
