The Montreal Canadiens may find themselves drafting in the top 5 for the fourth consecutive year in the upcoming NHL Draft. While some fans are disheartened by the team’s start to the season, others are excitedly looking ahead to the amateur draft.
Among those intrigued is Simon Boisvert, who has pinpointed the ideal target for the Canadiens. During a recent episode of the Processus podcast, the candid analyst shared his thoughts, asserting that the team should pursue defenseman Matthew Schaefer.
Boisvert stated: “Matthew Schaefer is the player Montreal needs. He’s the one to go for. But just like with Cale Makar in 2017, I doubt anyone will have the bravery to make this move. Schaefer is the key player that could help secure a Stanley Cup for Montreal within the next six years.”
Boisvert is stepping away from the widely accepted choice of James Hagens, opting instead for another defenseman, despite the Canadiens already having several in their system. However, Schaefer stands out as a unique asset; the team lacks a defenseman with his potential to be a true number one. With Lane Hutson struggling defensively, Kaiden Guhle’s inconsistency, and David Reinbacher still developing, Schaefer presents a rare opportunity.
Notably, Schaefer is not an unknown; he ranks among the top three on various prospect lists and shows significant promise. At just 17 years old, he plays for the Erie Otters in the OHL and has already recorded 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points in 8 games. Schaefer is a strong, speedy defenseman with an exceptional grasp of the game.
In addition to Schaefer and Hagens, the Canadiens might also consider Porter Martone and Michael Misa, both of whom are currently in the top three scorers in the OHL.
As the season progresses, there’s plenty of time for changes leading up to the draft, and it will be interesting to see if these four prospects remain top picks as the big day approaches.
