The finals of the 2024 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Girls Championships were held yesterday at the FMC Aquatic Center. Rosary claimed the state championship title again, with New Trier closely following, having previously won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. New Trier secured second place for the second consecutive year, while St Charles North took third.
Several remarkable performances occurred during the day, notably Rosary’s 200 free relay, which broke their own IHSA record set in prelims. Becky Rentz (22.65), Ariyana Nieckula (22.79), Paige Kowal (22.84), and Olivia Moore (23.41) finished with a time of 1:31.69, lowering their prelim time of 1:32.04 by nearly half a second. Other impressive splits included St Charles North’s Avery Luedke, anchoring her relay in 22.62, and Lyons’ Ella Jean Kelly anchoring in 22.76.
In a similar vein, St Charles North also surpassed their prelim record in the 400 free relay. Tessalina Stavropoulos (50.16), Luedke (49.37), Kate Farrell (50.59), and Izzy Beu (49.08) produced a time of 3:19.20, improving on their prelim time of 3:19.43. Rosary finished just behind them, with Nieckula (50.64), Rentz (48.89), Kowal (50.08), and Annabelle Nawrocki (50.75) achieving 3:20.36. The fastest split was recorded by New Trier’s Tierney Lenahan, anchoring in 48.49.
Outside of the relay events, Rosary’s Becky Rentz excelled in the finals, winning the 200 free with a time of 1:45.73, which is a personal best and close to the IHSA record of 1:45.53 set by Annika Parkhe in 2021. St Charles North’s Avery Luedke, a Tennessee recruit, also performed well, coming in second with a personal best of 1:47.83, down from her prelim time of 1:48.39.
Rentz followed her success in the 200 free by winning a close race in the 100 free, finishing in 48.69, edging out New Trier’s Lenahan, who touched in 48.79. Both swimmers achieved significant personal bests, with Rentz improving from a previous best of 49.89 and Lenahan from 49.68.
Lenahan also claimed victory in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.20, finishing well over a second ahead of her competitors, and has a personal best of 52.78 in the event. Avery Luedke returned to the pool for the 500 free, winning with a time of 4:48.42, surpassing her previous best of 4:49.15 from February.
In the 50 free, Whitney Young senior Isabella Chow, a Northwestern recruit, won decisively with a time of 22.53, improving her best from 22.75. St Charles North’s Izzy Beu excelled as well, winning both the 200 IM and the 100 fly. After recording 1:57.94 in prelims, she finished the 200 IM in 1:58.24 and later won the 100 fly with a time of 53.22, achieving a personal best. Beu is a Georgia recruit.
Rosary’s Elizabeth Nawrocki clinched the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.04, having set her personal best of 1:00.74 in prelims. Rockford Christian’s Brooke Corrigan finished closely behind in second with 1:01.12, marking a significant improvement from her prelim best of 1:00.94. Both Nawrocki and Beu will attend Georgia, while Corrigan will head to Wisconsin next fall.
New Trier also celebrated a win in the 200 medley relay, with Lenahan (25.30), Riley McNeal (28.82), Zara Bolton (23.77), and Maeve O’Donnell (22.76) finishing in 1:40.65.
Oswego junior Katie Malm captured first place in diving with a score of 492.00.
