The Canadiens have faced challenges at the center position for a long time, despite various efforts from both Kent Hughes and Marc Bergevin in the past. While Nick Suzuki currently occupies the primary center role, the second-line center position remains uncertain. Recent trials with Kirby Dach have not produced clear results, prompting management to consider other options for the second line.
It’s possible that the answer is already within the organization, albeit not fully developed yet. Young player Michael Hage appears to be a strong candidate for the second-line center role with the Canadiens. In a recent interview with Marco D’Amico for Responsible Gambler, Hage expressed his belief in his potential for this position.
Hage stated, “I believe I’ll be the type of offensive center who can play in a top-six role in the NHL. But I know I won’t get there on skill alone; it’s a process. I’ll have to earn it and work for it every day. Nothing is ever handed to you in the NHL.”
While he recognizes the opportunity, Hage is committed to taking his time. He understands the significant differences between NCAA and NHL play and is focused on his development, ensuring he won’t rush his readiness to join the team. “At the end of the year, I’ll talk to my agent and consider what Montreal wants to do, and we’ll go from there. But for now, my focus is 100% on helping my team win a championship,” he said.
This summer, Simon “Snake” Boisvert suggested that Hage could potentially serve as a second-line center for a championship-caliber team or excel as a third-line player, even comparing him to a more skilled version of Phillip Danault. If the 21st overall pick from the recent draft can develop into a center with both Danault’s defensive skills and Eichel’s offensive talent, the Canadiens could have a strong foundation for their future, especially alongside a player like Ivan Demidov.
