Brian Kelly and the LSU football staff recently lost a commitment from Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked player in the nation, who chose to switch his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines. Underwood had originally committed to LSU on January 6, which helped ignite a significant recruiting momentum for the Tigers. However, his decision to stay closer to home has put LSU’s 2025 recruiting class in a precarious position, with other programs eyeing their top commitments.
As the Early Signing Period approaches, beginning on December 4, Kelly and the coaching staff will aim to maintain their recruiting class despite a tough 2024 season. Currently, LSU boasts a 7-4 record following three straight losses to Texas A&M, Alabama, and Florida. This year, the Bayou Bengals have excelled in recruiting, securing commitments from prospects like DJ Pickett (the No. 1 cornerback), Harlem Berry (the No. 1 running back), and JT Lindsey (a top-10 running back). Additionally, Kade Phillips, a defensive back from Missouri City, Texas, recently flipped his commitment from Texas to LSU and has seen his ranking improve from four-star to the No. 23 overall recruit for 2025, achieving five-star status.
The LSU 2025 recruiting class is currently ranked in the Top 5 nationally, and with the Early Signing Period nearing, the focus is on keeping the class intact. During an appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show, Kelly spoke about the importance of maintaining communication with recruits during difficult times. He emphasized that relationships are crucial in recruiting, particularly in the current landscape where name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals are influential. Kelly noted, “If you have the right relationships, you can retain your players, even amid challenges.”
With less than 20 days until the Early Signing Period and “Flip Season” underway, LSU will continue to engage with their commitments to secure their 2025 class.
