It was quick and impactful, and I’m not referring to Sabrina Carpenter.
On Tuesday, the San Jose Sharks assigned promising goaltender Yaroslav Askarov back to the AHL and called up defenseman Jack Thompson.
The Sharks are currently at full capacity with a 23-man roster consisting of 14 forwards, seven defensemen, and two goalies.
Askarov left a lasting impression during his short stint with the Sharks, showcasing his impressive puck-saving skills, tricky puckhandling, and entertaining press conference performances. The 22-year-old recorded a record of 1-0-1 with a .927 Save percentage, offering Sharks fans a glimpse of a promising future in goal.
However, the Sharks have two other healthy, experienced goaltenders in Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek. Given that the team has been managing three goalies since last week, it was clear they couldn’t continue this way indefinitely.
It’s only a matter of time before Askarov secures a permanent role with the Sharks. Both Blackwood and Vanecek are potential trade options and unrestricted free agents, while Askarov is under contract until the 2026-27 season. Once one of them is traded, Askarov is likely to return.
This past week with Askarov was thrilling, and there’s more excitement ahead!
