Ulysses Bentley IV, the running back for the Ole Miss Rebels, has had limited chances in the backfield this season, but he made a significant impact in Friday’s Egg Bowl.
Originally viewed as one of the top two options in the Rebels’ rushing attack after fall camp, Bentley had not been heavily utilized during the first 11 games of the season, notably not getting a single carry in the loss to Florida last week. However, against Mississippi State, he carried the ball 20 times for 136 yards, including an impressive 89-yard touchdown run in the first half. “On that play call, I knew the guard was pulling,” Bentley explained. “Once I saw that hole and hit it on the inside, I knew I was fast enough that nobody could catch me.”
Following his touchdown, Bentley celebrated passionately, removing his helmet as a gesture of gratitude to the Ole Miss community. “Oxford has shown me so much love and support,” he said. “When I scored that touchdown, I felt compelled to connect with the crowd because of the appreciation they’ve shown.”
Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has praised Bentley as a model teammate despite his limited role in the offense this season. After the game, Bentley shared that he never questioned the coaching staff about his playing time and instead focused on maintaining a strong work ethic. “I’ve kept a positive attitude all year,” Bentley stated. “As a leader, it’s important to guide both younger and older teammates through challenges and be ready when your name is called.”
Bentley’s long touchdown run shifted the game’s momentum, giving Ole Miss a lead in the second quarter that they maintained to win their second consecutive Egg Bowl and fourth out of the last five meetings.
The Rebels are now awaiting their postseason prospects, having entered the week ranked No. 14 in the College Football Playoff Rankings. Recent upsets during Saturday’s rivalry games have kept alive a faint possibility for Ole Miss to secure a playoff spot.
The latest College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings will be unveiled on Tuesday night.
