Martin St. Louis was rather evasive in his post-game comments after his team’s loss this evening, as he declined to answer questions typically posed after a defeat.
The Canadiens suffered their 12th regulation loss of the season, falling 4-3 to the Rangers in New York.
After trailing 3-1 at the start of the final period, the Canadiens made a comeback with an early goal from Cole Caufield, followed by a tying score from captain Nick Suzuki with less than six minutes remaining.
However, despite their strong performance, the Canadiens lost the lead due to a power-play goal by Kappo Kakko with under a minute left, effectively sealing their defeat. The game also featured a controversial moment: a replay showed Joel Armia of the Canadiens being tripped by Will Cuylle before Kakko’s goal, with Cuylle also providing the assist.
Fans quickly pointed this out, especially as the NHL highlighted the play on social media. The Canadiens and their coach shared the fans’ frustration regarding the call.
In his post-game press conference, St. Louis only offered one consistent answer regardless of the questions asked. Each inquiry was met with, “I loved our game but I’m not going to talk about the refs,” which he repeated in both English and French to emphasize his message.
After several such exchanges, it became clear that St. Louis wouldn’t provide further insight, leading to the conclusion of the press conference. His remarks, while a subtle critique of the referees, hopefully won’t result in a fine, as he technically met his obligations by not directly commenting on their performance. We’ll have to wait to see if Gary Bettman reaches out to him regarding this incident.
