The Nashville Predators are currently struggling near the bottom of the NHL standings, prompting a need for change. To address this, they traded goalie Scott Wedgewood to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for goalie Justus Annunen and a draft pick. Following the trade, Wedgewood recounted an amusing encounter with Predators general manager Barry Trotz.
He shared that while staying at a hotel in Minnesota, he received the news of the trade when he was awakened to find Trotz outside his door. This revelation came after Wedgewood had played just five games with Nashville. “It’s actually kind of funny,” he remarked to NHL.com. “I was asleep in the hotel after the game and heard some odd noises. I looked through the peephole and saw Barry Trotz standing there.”
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Wedgewood said he felt like he must have done something wrong. Nevertheless, when Trotz entered, they had a pleasant conversation. Wedgewood appreciated Trotz’s approach, stating that he truly cares about his players.
Wedgewood had signed a two-year contract with the Predators during the NHL Free Agency this summer, but his time there did not unfold as positively as expected; he posted an .878 save percentage in his five games.
Now, with the Avalanche, Wedgewood hopes to turn things around with a stronger team. Colorado’s current record stands at 13-11-0, and they have been in need of a reliable goalie. Wedgewood is eager to provide that support.
“Funny enough, I’ve always envisioned playing here,” he mentioned about joining Colorado. “I’ve had good experiences in Dallas, Arizona, and Nashville, and now I’m in a strong market with elite talents. It feels great to be part of a Cup contender.”
It remains to be seen when Wedgewood will make his debut for the team, but he is excited about the opportunity to contribute to Colorado’s success. The Avalanche have a game against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night, followed by a five-game road trip starting with the Buffalo Sabres.
