The Montreal Canadiens had to compete in their first 24 games without their latest star, Patrik Laine, who was sidelined due to a preseason lower-body injury following his trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets.
After a couple of months, Laine returned to the ice and made a significant impact, scoring two goals in his first two games.
Just a day after his debut, Laine was named to Team Finland’s roster for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off. Although some were surprised by his inclusion given his absence for much of the 2024-25 season, Team Finland’s general manager, Jere Lehtinen, emphasized that they had been monitoring his recovery and considered him a vital part of their team.
“We’ve been in contact with him, and knowing his current status, it’s fantastic for him and the Canadiens,” Lehtinen shared in an interview with Responsible Gambler. “He’s back from injury sooner than expected and is ready to compete.”
Laine has scored both of his Canadiens goals while on the power play, highlighting an essential aspect of his skill set. This is also a main reason Finland wanted him on their team.
In a condensed tournament format, teams need every edge they can find, and a player like Laine poses a significant threat during power plays against other nations.
“Yeah, we know what he can do,” Lehtinen stated to RG. “He excels in special teams with those abilities. In a short tournament, special teams will play a crucial role.”
Not only is Laine healthy, but he also has ample opportunity to play games and find his rhythm before the 4 Nations Tournament scheduled for February 2025.
