After the New York Rangers revealed a few weeks ago that they were planning to move on from certain players, the names Jacob Trouba, Chris Kreider, and Mika Zibanejad emerged in discussions.
With Trouba already traded to the Anaheim Ducks, Zibanejad seems to be the next player on the Rangers’ radar for potential deals.
Zibanejad’s Trade Rumors
Reports from Marco D’Amico at RG.org indicate that the Rangers are actively shopping Zibanejad, with D’Amico stating, “He’s out there for sure.” He noted that a source mentioned the team isn’t necessarily trying to part ways with him, but they’re open to the possibility if the right offer comes along. The report also revealed that trade discussions have occurred between the Rangers and a Western Conference team.
“They talked about him, but I’m not sure if a deal is likely. It seems more like the Rangers are looking to assess his market value.”
Should he be traded, it will be interesting to see what the Rangers receive in return, especially considering that Trouba’s trade netted a depth defenseman and a mid-round draft pick.
Zibanejad has spent the last nine seasons with the Rangers, tallying five goals and 14 assists for a total of 19 points in 26 games this season. He is currently under an eight-year contract with an average annual value of $8.5 million.
Potential Suitors for Zibanejad
Zibanejad still has a lot to offer in terms of hockey talent. However, after nine years with the same organization, both he and the Rangers might benefit from a fresh start.
Teams likely interested in Zibanejad could mirror those that pursued Trouba, including the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators (his original team), Buffalo Sabres, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Additionally, some mid-tier teams, such as the Nashville Predators, might consider reshaping their roster to acquire him.
