The New York Rangers may consider trading their franchise icon Chris Kreider if they receive an appealing offer.
According to Arthur Staple and Peter Baugh from The Athletic, the Rangers are actively exploring a trade for Kreider across the league. They reported that general manager Chris Drury has communicated to the other 31 NHL general managers that the team is open to trading Kreider, who was specifically named in these discussions.
Kreider, who will turn 34 on April 30, 2025, has played his entire 13-year career with the Rangers. While he has been a reliable and healthy player, his performance has dipped this season, recording only 10 goals and 11 points over 27 games, along with a -4 rating.
Last season, the Massachusetts native enjoyed one of his most productive years, finishing with 39 goals and 75 points, ranking him ninth in the NHL with 136 goals over the past four seasons, as per The Athletic. His decline in production this season seems pronounced in comparison.
The Rangers’ willingness to consider trades reflects their desire to move past previous playoff disappointments. Kreider’s scoring and playmaking abilities contributed significantly to the Rangers’ successful season last year, during which they won the President’s Trophy and reached the playoffs in three of the last four years. However, after failing to secure the Stanley Cup despite being favored last season, the team is eager to shake up their roster and improve their current 15-14-1 record. The potential trade of Kreider indicates their commitment to aggressively rebuild the team before the March 8 trade deadline.
