At the start of the season, the Golden State Warriors had significant expectations for Brandin Podziemski. In October, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr indicated that Podziemski was set to manage the team’s minutes when Steph Curry was off the court. “I think BP will fill that role,” Kerr stated to NBC Sports Bay Area, noting that Podziemski might start or come off the bench, but would be responsible for much of the ball-handling.
However, following the acquisition of Dennis Schroder from the Brooklyn Nets, it became evident that the Warriors were shifting their approach. During a recent press conference, Kerr acknowledged that placing Podziemski in a lead guard role was “unfair,” asserting that he’s more effective when playing off the ball.
Kerr and Schroder shared several insights in their recent pressers, with Schroder participating in scrimmages with the second unit to ease him into the team. While he will also start and close games, Kerr emphasized the importance of allowing Podziemski to thrive in a complementary role. So far this season, Podziemski has averaged 7.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, with shooting percentages of 38% from the field, 25% from three-point range, and 75% from the free-throw line. He is currently experiencing a significant slump in his second year, and the addition of Schroder may help him regain his form. The Warriors are set to play against the Memphis Grizzlies at 8:00 p.m. EST on Thursday.
