Former Rangers forward Sean Avery has reportedly spoken with Rangers GM Chris Drury about the possibility of joining the team this season. During his career, Avery played in 590 NHL regular-season games, with 264 of those for the New York Rangers.
Known for his smaller stature yet aggressive playstyle and irritating presence, Avery embodied the spirit of Rangers hockey. He could potentially return to the team in a new capacity if Drury decides to move on from head coach Peter Laviolette. Avery has allegedly already met with Drury to advocate for his candidacy to take over the coaching role.
“I have officially thrown my name in the hat for the head coach position of the New York Rangers. I have already reached out to my staff, and we have organized our responsibilities… I’m even considering a co-head coach role with Steve Ott,” Avery stated.
On another note, former NHL player Paul Bissonnette suggested that Avery might also be in line to succeed Chris Drury as GM. However, NHL reporter Emily Kaplan highlighted that Rangers owner James Dolan is still satisfied with Drury’s performance. “The owner, James Dolan, continues to support Chris Drury, and he was aware of the memo Drury sent out last month that has led to the current issues.”
This raises the question of whether Avery may join the team as a coach instead. The Rangers are expected to make significant changes soon, having already altered their roster by trading Jacob Trouba and Kaapo Kakko, so the next adjustments could affect the coaching staff or the front office. It remains unclear whether Sean Avery will be involved in those future plans.
