The Wisconsin Badgers are experiencing significant changes during the current transfer portal season. With Luke Fickell aiming to revamp the entire roster following disappointing performances in recent seasons, there has also been a notable departure of players from the team. It appears that the Badgers will lose a defensive asset after EDGE Anelu Lafaele, a former four-star recruit, decided to transfer to Big Ten rival Michigan State, as reported by Justin Thind of 247Sports.
Lafaele, who was a promising recruit in the 2024 class, has four years of eligibility remaining. In high school at Farrington High School in Honolulu, he recorded 7.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and 30 overall tackles, showcasing his defensive potential. Although he redshirted during the 2024 season, allowing veterans like Leon Lowery, John Pius, Darryl Peterson, and Aaron Witt to dominate the edge positions, he now aims to fulfill that potential at Michigan State.
Recruiting Lafaele was a significant achievement for Luke Fickell and the Badgers, especially during a tumultuous period following Paul Chryst’s departure. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound edge rusher was a standout from Hawaii, ranked as the No. 3 player in the state and the No. 51 edge rusher in the nation by On3 Industry Rankings. He initially chose Wisconsin over offers from Arizona State, Washington, and Hawaii, perceived for his quick first step and pass-rushing abilities. Joined by another four-star recruit, Thomas Heiberger, the duo was expected to be key to a new era of defensive prowess under Fickell. However, Lafaele’s exit and that of several others present challenges for the Badgers.
Part of Lafaele’s decision to leave may stem from tough competition for playing time at Wisconsin, where experienced players like Peterson, Witt, Lowery, and Pius are present, alongside rising junior Sebastian Cheeks and Louisville transfer Mason Reiger adding depth to the roster. With many seasoned players and developing talent, opportunities for newcomers would be limited. Despite Lafaele’s undeniable potential, his chances for significant playing time with the Badgers seemed scarce.
Looking ahead, the Badgers still boast considerable talent at outside linebacker, with Peterson, Witt, and Cheeks set to return, while Heiberger and Willor Jr. represent promising future prospects.
