Joshua Roy had a chance to demonstrate his skills with the Canadiens after beginning the season in the American Hockey League. He played four games with the big club but failed to make an impact. As a result, the organization chose to send him back to Laval, a decision that has proven to be wise given his performance since returning.
Since early December, he has participated in eight games with the Rocket and has been performing well. He has tallied seven points in those eight games, despite having three scoreless outings:
– One goal against Syracuse (December 4)
– One goal against Toronto (December 6)
– One assist against Toronto (December 7)
– No points against Rochester (December 11)
– No points against Hartford (December 14)
– No points against Bridgeport (December 15)
– One goal and one assist against Belleville (December 20)
– One goal and one assist against Springfield (December 22)
As of now, the Canadiens’ prospect has accumulated 23 points in 25 AHL games this season, which is impressive for a 21-year-old player. His scoring and production are commendable, but there is one area where Roy needs improvement: consistency.
This is evident in his performance since being sent back to Laval. While he is recognized as an offensive player capable of being responsible in all three zones — he even played a defensive role at the World Junior Championship — he has also been labeled as someone who does not perform consistently.
Roy has the skills and talent necessary to play at the NHL level. Last season, he held his own, contributing nine points in 23 games, and at times appeared to fit in well. However, he was cut by the Canadiens early in the season primarily due to a poor training camp and inconsistency during that time. He approached September with an assumption that he had a secure spot on the roster, which ultimately cost him.
It is now up to him to demonstrate that he can maintain a consistent level of effort every night. By playing with intensity in each game, he can earn the chance for a recall and build a successful NHL career, as his talent is undeniable.
