Matt Rhule was proactive in utilizing the transfer portal during this cycle.
The Nebraska head coach brought in 11 new players from the portal. Before we evaluate how this class ranks nationally and among Big Ten programs, let’s clarify the circumstances under which players can leave their current teams.
Although the transfer portal window for underclassmen closed at 11:59 p.m. local time on Saturday, compliance offices have a 48-hour period to process the submissions. This means players could still technically enter the portal before midnight on Monday.
Additional exceptions to the main transfer window include a brief period after the season ends, graduate transfers, and coaching changes. Players have five days after their season concludes, including any bowl game, to enter the portal, giving Nebraska players until Thursday. Graduate transfers have different rules and can enter the portal at any time, while players affected by a coaching change have 30 days to make their decisions.
With those details established, Nebraska’s class currently ranks in the top 10 nationally according to 247Sports, sitting at No. 10 overall and second in the Big Ten, only behind Wisconsin.
As of Sunday morning, the top 10 nationally is as follows:
1. LSU
2. Texas Tech
3. Ole Miss
4. Auburn
5. Mississippi State
6. Florida State
7. Kentucky
8. Wisconsin
9. Texas A&M
10. Nebraska
For the Big Ten, the standings as of Sunday morning are:
1. Wisconsin
2. Nebraska
3. Minnesota
4. Oregon
5. UCLA
6. Michigan State
7. Indiana
8. Washington
9. Ohio State
10. Maryland
Nebraska’s new roster includes several former five-star recruits, and 247Sports has rated the transfers as four four-stars and five three-stars.
Two of the new Huskers rank among the top 20 transfers overall: wide receiver Dane Key at No. 10 and edge rusher Williams Nwaneri at No. 16.
Others making the top 200 include wide receiver Nyziah Hunter (76), linebacker Dasan McCullough (95), and cornerback Andrew Marshall (197).
The incoming class for Nebraska could still expand throughout January. Given that the College Football Playoff national championship is scheduled for Jan. 20, players participating in that game will have until Jan. 25 to enter the extended portal window.
