Former Wisconsin offensive tackle Nolan Rucci showcased his exceptional skills as he and the Penn State Nittany Lions triumphed over Boise State 31-14 in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal (Fiesta Bowl). Starting at right tackle for the fourth straight game, Rucci allowed no pressures on 33 pass-blocking snaps and achieved an impressive run-blocking grade of 86.8, according to ProFootballFocus.
His outstanding performance contributed to a Penn State offense that accumulated 387 total yards—216 rushing (averaging 5.3 yards per carry) and 171 passing. The Nittany Lions quickly established a 14-0 lead with two touchdown passes from Drew Allar. Although Boise State narrowed the score to 17-14 early in the third quarter, Penn State secured the victory with strong performances from running backs Kaytron Allen (17 carries for 134 yards, 7.9 yards per carry) and Nicholas Singleton (12 carries for 87 yards, 7.3 yards per carry, including one touchdown). Rucci played a key role in enhancing that rushing attack, aiding Penn State’s advance to the CFP Semifinals.
This performance continues a streak of remarkable play for the former five-star recruit, who was PFF’s highest-graded offensive lineman (76.6) from the CFP First Round, following notable outings against Maryland and Oregon in the Big Ten title game.
Rucci has stepped into the starting right tackle position after the previous starter, Anthony Donkoh, sustained a long-term injury, marking his first significant playing time as a starter after three years as a backup with the Badgers.
Wisconsin fans had hoped to see Rucci blocking for a top-rated quarterback and standout running back aiming for a national title, specifically for Graham Mertz and Braelon Allen. Instead, he is now protecting Allar and Singleton/Allen at Penn State.
