BROWNLEE – The US Geological Survey has announced that an earthquake occurred in Nebraska on January 1.
A quake measuring 3.0 in magnitude was recorded near Brownlee, making it one of the stronger earthquakes noted on the USGS shake map.
Out of 49 earthquakes reported in the last day, this Nebraska quake stood out as one of the most significant in the United States on January 1, alongside a 3.2 magnitude quake in Oregon.
The Cherry County earthquake took place near Duck Lake, close to the North Loup River in the Sand Hills, south of the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge. A USGS map indicates the proximity of the unincorporated communities of Brownlee and Elsmere, with Brownlee having a population of 15 as of 2010.
