Add another achievement to the illustrious career of Henrik Lundqvist, a legend of the New York Rangers.
Lundqvist, who holds the record for the most wins by a goalie in Rangers history, leads the Class of 2025 for the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame. The announcement was made on Friday, and his induction will take place in Stockholm on May 25, a fitting venue for the Sweden-native.
Joining Lundqvist in this class are three former NHL players: Zdeno Chara (Slovakia), Frans Nielsen (Denmark), and David Vyborny (Czechia). Additionally, two women’s players, Vicky Sunohara (Canada) and Kim Martin-Hasson (Sweden), along with Kai Hintarinta from Finland in the builder’s category, are also being inducted.
The IIHF honors those who have significantly contributed to international hockey. Lundqvist, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023, is celebrated in Sweden for his impressive international achievements while representing the Tre Kronor.
Among his standout moments, Lundqvist played a crucial role in leading Sweden to a gold medal at the 2006 Turin Olympics, finishing with a 5-1 record and a 2.33 goals-against average. He was instrumental in their 3-2 victory over Finland in the gold medal match.
Lundqvist also represented Sweden in the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Olympics, maintaining a goals-against average below 2.00 each time. He helped secure a silver medal in 2014 after a 3-0 loss to Canada in the gold medal game.
His international experience includes participation in the 2001 and 2002 World Junior Championships and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He led Sweden to a gold medal at the World Championship in 2017 and a silver in 2004.
Notably, Lundqvist is recognized as the winningest European-born goalie in NHL history, with 459 victories—each with the Rangers, the only team he played for throughout his 15-season career. He boasts a career 2.43 GAA, a .918 save percentage, and 64 shutouts over 887 NHL games. He was honored with the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goalie in 2011-12.
In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Lundqvist achieved a record of 61-67 with a 2.30 GAA and .921 save percentage. He ranks alongside Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy for the most Game 7 playoff wins, with six, and guided the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Final three times and the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
The Rangers honored Lundqvist by retiring his No. 30 jersey in a ceremony at Madison Square Garden on January 28, 2022. Currently, he serves as a hockey analyst for select Rangers games on MSG Network and TNT’s NHL coverage and co-hosts the Club 30 podcast.
Chara and Nielsen both have connections to the Rangers’ primary rival, the Islanders. Chara was drafted by the Islanders in 1996 and spent his first 272 games there, returning for 72 games in the 2021-22 season, marking the end of his 1,680-game NHL career.
