Although the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 season has concluded, the team remains a focal point in the news as they enter the offseason. Central to the discussion around the Steelers—beyond the ongoing scrutiny of head coach Mike Tomlin—are potential quarterback plans and the future of troubled wide receiver George Pickens.
During his press conference at the end of the season, Tomlin was vague regarding both quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, though he acknowledged that Fields demonstrated his ability to be a starter this past season. Both quarterbacks are set to become free agents, but it’s reasonable to assume that the team will aim to bring back Fields for the 2025 season if he is willing. Fields had a successful stint, finishing with a 4-2 record as the Steelers’ starting quarterback in 2024, and may receive better offers from other teams.
On the other hand, former league MVP Aaron Rodgers seems unlikely to be a candidate for the Steelers. His age (41) and decreased mobility were cited as major factors in the team’s reported disinterest, according to Gerry Dulac from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I can assure you that it won’t be Aaron Rodgers,” Dulac stated on “The Rich Eisen Show.”
Regarding Wilson, Dulac indicated that the Steelers might not be seeking a long-term deal with him, despite Wilson expressing his wish to return to Pittsburgh for his 14th NFL season. They will likely pursue a veteran quarterback during the offseason but are still deciding between Wilson or another option like Sam Darnold.
As for Pickens, both the Post-Gazette and Sports Illustrated have hinted at his uncertain future with the team. SI mentioned that the Steelers might be looking to “move on” from him as they revamp their receiving lineup. While Pickens has shown productivity, his maturity issues have hampered his prospects, including incidents like being late to the Week 17 loss against the Chiefs.
The Steelers could potentially gain a valuable draft pick in exchange for Pickens, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. This could enable them to search for a replacement.
Beyond quarterback and receiver, the Steelers are also expected to address the running back and defensive line positions this offseason. Their defensive line struggled significantly, allowing 299 rushing yards in the playoff loss to Baltimore. Additionally, they might need to find a replacement for Najee Harris, as he is set to enter free agency for the first time.
