Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette addressed Matt Rempe’s influence on the team following his return from an eight-game suspension.
Matt Rempe, 22, appears to have showcased a different aspect of his game since his suspension, stating that he feels like a targeted player. He emphasized the need to be more cautious with his physicality. “I don’t take any penalties,” Rempe noted. “I want to maintain my physical play without drawing penalties.”
In his first three games post-suspension, the New York Rangers have seen Rempe manage to stay disciplined, an encouraging sign for the team that is in need of a morale boost.
Laviolette praised Rempe’s performance, expressing that the team is supporting him in harnessing his physical talents while minimizing unnecessary penalties. “He looks good,” Laviolette commented. “Some nights he stands out more with his hits and forechecking, creating an energy on the ice. He is fulfilling our expectations.”
Laviolette added that they frequently discuss the areas where Rempe can adjust his play: “He needs to process changes and make smart decisions when preparing for a hit. I think he’s learning.”
Rempe concurs, stating that he is satisfied with his progress and aims to fully embrace his physical playing style, having contributed one assist in eight games this season. It’s encouraging to see him diligently working to address his past weaknesses with the goal of becoming a dependable NHL player.
