The disappointing conclusion to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season may have paved the way for a quarterback change in 2025.
Gerry Dulac from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette shared his predictions for the Steelers’ 2025 lineup, making a significant assertion about the quarterback situation. He noted that Russell Wilson’s lackluster finish to the season, coupled with his disconnect with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, diminishes the likelihood of his return next year. Instead, Dulac speculates that the team will re-sign Justin Fields and name him the starter.
“Wilson was brought in to help end the playoff victory drought, and that did not happen,” Dulac remarked. “Acquiring another veteran quarterback wouldn’t make sense. Therefore, Fields will likely be given the opportunity to lead. At just 25, he demonstrated considerable growth during his time in Chicago.”
Both Fields and Wilson are set to enter free agency this offseason, and it’s anticipated that the Steelers will not keep both quarterbacks. Not long ago, the team expressed satisfaction with Wilson, but opinions shifted as the season wound down. The Steelers suffered five consecutive losses, including a playoff defeat to Baltimore, with Wilson averaging only 174.5 passing yards per game and totaling four touchdown passes over his last four regular-season games.
It’s worth mentioning that Fields started the season as Pittsburgh’s primary quarterback, leading the team to a 4-2 record before losing his starting role to Wilson. He himself acknowledged that he did not perform particularly well during that stretch.
Ultimately, the Steelers appeared to have resolved their quarterback situation a month ago; however, circumstances have since changed, reigniting uncertainties for the long term.
