Shortly after it was announced that cornerback Xavier Lucas planned to transfer to the Miami Hurricanes without officially entering the transfer portal, the Wisconsin Badgers released a statement addressing the matter. The Badgers disclosed that Lucas had entered into a binding two-year agreement with Wisconsin Athletics and had also made a deal with the Varsity Collective.
“We are disappointed that Xavier Lucas has decided to leave the University of Wisconsin,” the statement said. “He has been a valuable part of our football program, and we were eager to support his development as a student, individual, and athlete.”
“On December 2, 2024, Xavier signed a binding two-year NIL agreement with Wisconsin Athletics, demonstrating his strong commitment to the Wisconsin football program. We also recognize that he signed a separate agreement with the Varsity Collective. His agreement with Wisconsin Athletics included significant financial compensation. The terms of this agreement remain in effect and enforceable. Badger student-athletes who have signed these agreements expect Wisconsin Athletics to uphold the terms. Conversely, Wisconsin Athletics depends on the assurances given by the student-athletes upon signing these agreements. Requesting to enter the transfer portal after making such an agreement contradicts the commitments and mutual understanding of the agreement, which is why we are unable to process his transfer request under these circumstances.”
Additionally, the Badgers alleged that tampering had occurred between Lucas and the Hurricanes, claiming they possess credible evidence to support this assertion.
“According to the transfer provision utilized by Xavier this past week, any contact between a student-athlete at one institution and the football program of the institution they wish to transfer to is forbidden by NCAA rules,” the statement elaborated. “We have credible information suggesting that there was improper contact between Xavier and personnel from the University of Miami football program prior to his request to enter the transfer portal. NCAA tampering rules and the law prohibit direct interference with a committed player and their contractual commitments.”
