The Auburn football program has officially completed its coaching staff for the 2025 season. Several coaches have departed for new opportunities, including former defensive coordinator Charles Kelly, who has taken the head coaching position at Jacksonville State, and Josh Aldridge, who is now the defensive coordinator at East Carolina.
Earlier this month, Tanner Burns, the former special teams coordinator, announced his move to Texas State, where he will serve as the associate head coach, special teams coordinator, and defensive analyst. In his place, head coach Hugh Freeze has appointed Chad Lunsford as the new special teams coordinator.
Lunsford previously held roles at Auburn from 2009 to 2013, serving as the Director of Scouting and the Director of Player Personnel, and he was part of the 2010 National Championship team. His main responsibilities included recruiting and prospect evaluation, and he was recognized by Auburn Undercover for implementing innovative strategies and technologies that contributed to successful recruiting efforts.
After leaving Auburn, Lunsford became an assistant at Georgia Southern, where from 2013 to 2016 he coached wide receivers, tight ends, and special teams. He was promoted to head coach in 2017, achieving a record of 28-17 and guiding the team to three bowl games.
In 2021, Lunsford moved to Florida Atlantic University, where he was responsible for coaching tight ends and special teams. He was elevated to associate head coach and special teams coordinator in 2023 and stepped in as interim head coach in November 2024.
