Lofy entered the transfer portal on December 17 after spending five years with the Badgers and will join the Owls for his final year of eligibility. The experienced cornerback had a fluctuating career at Wisconsin. He redshirted in 2020 after arriving as a three-star recruit from Colorado. In 2021, he played in eight games as a redshirt freshman, making three tackles in total.
His most successful season was in 2022 when he appeared in 12 games, started once, and recorded 15 tackles along with one interception. However, he missed the entire 2023 season due to injury. He began 2024 as the Badgers’ starting slot cornerback but was limited to just nine games because of minor injuries, during which he made seven tackles and had one pass deflection.
Lofy is joining a Rice program that finished 4-8 in 2024 during its second year in the American Athletic Conference. The team parted ways with head coach Mike Bloomgren mid-season after a 2-6 start and has since appointed Scott Abell from Davidson as the new head coach.
He is among 23 scholarship players who left Wisconsin during the winter transfer window, a number that was previously as high as 24 until defensive lineman Jamel Howard decided to withdraw from the portal and return to the Badgers.
As of January 23, all 23 departing scholarship players have secured new opportunities, with the exception of walk-on kicker Nate Van Zelst, who has yet to find a new team.
Lofy is one of several cornerbacks who transferred; fellow players include true freshman Xavier Lucas (Miami) and redshirt freshmen Amare Snowden (Toledo), Jonas Duclona (South Florida), and Jace Arnold (Sam Houston State).
