Kaapo Kakko, the 2nd overall pick of the 2019 draft, recently criticized his former team, the New York Rangers, after being traded to the Seattle Kraken. The Rangers made a surprising move in December by trading Kakko to Seattle along with two draft picks in exchange for Will Borgen, shortly after dealing their captain, Jacob Trouba, to the Anaheim Ducks.
Following the trade, Kakko expressed his desire for a fresh start, stating that he hoped to be given the opportunity to showcase his skills and was eager to begin this new chapter. He said, “I hope I’m going to get a chance over here. I think that’s what the coach is telling me here, just play your game and they’re going to trust me. That’s all that I need.”
More than a month later, Kakko reflected on his progress in an interview, revealing that he has regained his confidence, which he attributed to the coach’s supportive approach and increased opportunities in the offensive zone. His comments hinted at frustrations with the Rangers, as he noted the limited chances he had to utilize his abilities while with the team.
He stated, “The confidence is something you can have or lose. I feel it’s getting better now. I’m making plays and getting chances in the [offensive] zone. I’m trying to find my game again, like I did before entering the NHL.” He continued to emphasize the positive atmosphere in Seattle, mentioniong that his confidence has significantly improved.
Kakko has since scored 13 points, including four goals, in 16 games with the Kraken, compared to his 14 points and four goals in 30 games with the Rangers, indicating that he has found his rhythm and confidence in his new environment.
