Nebraska football plans to pursue a running back during the spring transfer window.
Due to a lack of depth at the running back position, reports indicate that Nebraska will seek to add a running back in the upcoming spring transfer period.
At one time, three running backs from Nebraska were in the transfer portal. While Emmett Johnson has opted to return and is expected to start for the 2025 season, the team still lacks depth at the running back spot.
Besides Johnson, only Heinrich Haarberg on the roster has more than 100 career carries, with Johnson leading returning players at 113 carries last season, followed by Haarberg with 25 and Jacory Barney with 10.
Dylan Raiola contributed 50 rushing attempts, although many were due to sacks or kneel-downs. Kwinten Ives and Mekhi Nelson, two backs vying for the backup position, combined for just seven carries last season.
While this doesn’t preclude them from stepping into larger roles next season, they remain untested. Nebraska will also welcome four-star recruit Jamarion Parker and Connor Booth, a record-setting high school running back who excelled at a lower level of competition.
I have high expectations for Parker and Booth, but it seems another experienced running back is necessary. According to Pete Nakos of On3.com, Nebraska football “will target a complementary back” in the spring transfer portal.
Nakos also mentioned that Nebraska will look for an additional defensive lineman, specifically a nose tackle to replace Nash Humacher. Another offensive tackle is also needed. The Huskers might be on the verge of bolstering their offensive line if they secure a commitment from Notre Dame transfer Rocco Spindler, but they could still benefit from adding more depth at tackle.
