The Buffalo Bills fell short of beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs once again, leaving Josh Allen and the team with more playoff heartbreak and potential turmoil. Despite investing heavily in building a championship-caliber roster, the Bills are expected to face a talent drain in the upcoming NFL offseason, with several key players becoming free agents and the team being over the 2024 NFL salary cap. In addition, All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs’ uncertain future and potential contract negotiations could further complicate matters for both sides. While Diggs is expected to remain in Buffalo, the situation could lead to major surgery on his contract and further issues with the team’s disgruntled No. 1 receiver.
Due to Buffalo’s cap situation, addressing Diggs’ contract is a necessity. As the team’s Pro Bowl wideout, he carries the second-largest cap hit, just behind Allen ($47.056 million). Given his performance in the latter half of the regular season, an extension for the 31-year-old seems unlikely.
While NFL regulations permit the Bills to make minor adjustments to Diggs’ contract without his consent, providing some financial relief in 2024, significant modifications would require his approval to maximize cap savings. Currently, it appears that Buffalo will retain their top receiver, but the handling of Diggs’ contract by Beane could alter the situation later in the offseason.
