The Browns have hired Ken Dorsey as their new offensive coordinator, hoping his background as a quarterback and QB coach will help him work his magic with Deshaun Watson. Dorsey was introduced by coach Kevin Stefanski, who made several changes to his staff following an 11-6 regular season and wild-card playoff loss. Dorsey has already connected with Watson and is looking forward to getting to know him better as a person and player. He helped Cam Newton become league MVP in 2015 and under his guidance, Josh Allen became one of the league’s top passers. Stefanski said it’s not yet decided who will call plays and Dorsey made it clear that winning football games is more important than play-calling. Dorsey didn’t want to revisit the circumstances of his ouster by Bills coach Sean McDermott after 10 games.
Just days after the Browns’ 45-14 playoff loss to the Houston Texans, Stefanski made significant changes to his offensive staff. Alex Van Pelt was fired, Stump Mitchell was dismissed from his role as running backs coach, and T.C. McCartney was not retained as tight ends coach. Duce Staley, who was let go from his position in Carolina last season, has taken over as the new running backs coach, while Tommy Rees, who served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator under Nick Saban last season, has replaced McCartney. Cleveland’s new defensive line coach is Jacques Cesaire. However, Stefanski still needs to fill the vacancy for the offensive line coach position, which was left open when Bill Callahan, one of the league’s best, departed to join his son Brian’s staff in Tennessee. When asked about the situation, Stefanski said, “He’s going to work for Brian. I can’t wait for Brian to boss him around. The dream of every kid is to boss their parents around. Happy for those guys. Organizationally, we realized that’s a unique situation and did not want to stand in the way of that.”
