In 2024, the Chicago Bears could potentially help out a rookie quarterback by trading for Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills, according to a proposal by Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton. The Bills are facing a tough financial situation with a $51.2 million salary-cap deficit, and Diggs’ future with the team is uncertain after he made comments at the 2024 Pro Bowl Game. Moton suggests that the Bears could trade their worst first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft for Diggs, but also advises them to try and trade down with a quarterback-needy team to acquire more draft capital. However, the four-year, $96 million contract Diggs signed with the Bills in 2022 makes the trade a bit tricky for the Bears, who already have a high-priced receiver in DJ Moore. While the Bears have a good amount of cap space, they may prefer to use it to address other roster needs rather than investing in another expensive receiver.
Looking ahead to the 2024 Draft, the Bears will need to address their receiver position this offseason. With Darnell Mooney and Equanimeous St. Brown set to become unrestricted free agents in March, the possibility of signing a veteran free agent cannot be ruled out.
However, if the Bears are looking to find their own Stefon Diggs, they could consider investing in a rookie wide receiver in the first round of the draft. Regardless of their decision at quarterback – whether they stick with Justin Fields or draft Caleb Williams or Drake Maye with the No. 1 pick – selecting a receiver in the first round would be a wise move for Chicago.
If they choose to build around Fields, Marvin Harrison Jr. would be a logical target within the first three picks. Alternatively, they could potentially land Malik Nabors or Rome Odunze with the ninth overall pick if they opt for a different quarterback.
Regardless of the outcome, the Bears will acquire a strong addition to Moore and position themselves well to enhance their passing game in the upcoming season. Furthermore, they will not have to spend a large sum of money like they did for Stefon Diggs. It’s a simple decision.
