The New York Jets have completed their transition at the receivers coach position with the hiring of former Jets player and coach Shawn Jefferson. Meanwhile, former coach Zach Azzanni has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in the same role. Azzanni had coached for just one season with the Jets, during which the team’s pass-catchers struggled due to poor quarterback play and ineffective talent management. The only exception was star receiver Garrett Wilson, who caught 95 passes for 1,042 yards and three touchdowns. The Jets failed to receive notable contributions from other components of their depth chart, including Allen Lazard, who had signed a four-year, $44 million deal but only logged 23 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown. The Jets decided to reunite with Jefferson, who had previously served as their assistant head coach/wide receivers coach under Adam Gase for two seasons, and has also coached for five other NFL teams over the past 18 years.
