During this offseason, the Buffalo Bills are in search of a backup quarterback and may consider a familiar face who recently became a free agent. According to Brooke Pryor of ESPN, veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although Trubisky lost his position as No. 2 to Mason Rudolph last season, his release was unexpected as he had signed a two-year extension in 2023.
As Trubisky enters the open market, an insider has suggested that the Bills may pursue their former backup, who is still highly regarded within the organization. Trubisky previously served as the Bills’ backup quarterback in 2021, receiving limited playing time behind the durable Josh Allen. Bills general manager Brandon Beane revealed that there was high competition for Trubisky, a former starter for the Chicago Bears and No. 2 overall pick, but he convinced him to spend a year under the coaching staff that helped Allen develop into a star.
During an interview with SiriusXM NFL, Brandon Beane stated that the Bills sold the idea to Mitch Trubisky and his agent of coming to Buffalo for a reboot, to work with Josh Allen, Jake Fromm, Davis Webb, offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey. The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia believes that the Bills could still pursue Trubisky as an affordable free-agent addition, given Beane’s positive comments about Trubisky’s backup performance in 2021. SI.com’s Albert Breer also predicts that Trubisky could return to Buffalo to provide stability behind Allen. Meanwhile, SI.com’s Connor Orr predicts that Allen will win league MVP in 2024, based on his ability to do a lot of heavy lifting for the Bills offense.
