In 2023, the Buffalo Bills made a great first-round pick by adding tight end Dalton Kincaid to their team. Kincaid quickly became a favorite target for quarterback Josh Allen and set a franchise record for rookie pass-catchers. However, Kincaid’s success may put veteran tight end Dawson Knox in a difficult position, and insiders suggest that he could be traded this offseason. Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report believes that the Miami Dolphins may be interested in Knox, who has proven to be a strong red-zone target despite struggling with injuries. Tansey believes that Kincaid’s role will continue to grow in his second season, making Knox expendable for the Bills. If the Bills do decide to trade Knox, Tansey thinks the Dolphins would be a good fit for him as their offense has lacked impact from the tight end position. While Knox doesn’t need to be a high-volume pass-catcher, he would be a valuable acquisition if he can be effective in the red zone.
Knox’s production has decreased since his breakout season in 2021, where he had 49 catches for 587 yards and nine touchdowns. He struggled with injuries last season, only appearing in 12 games due to mid-season wrist surgery, resulting in career-lows of 22 catches for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bills may benefit financially by moving Knox, as they are expected to be over the cap by $50 million. CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso suggested that the team could restructure Knox’s contract and give him a pay cut, saving approximately $2.6 million.
Bills general manager Brandon Beane has warned that the team will face another tight offseason due to little cap space for signing draft picks and free agents. The team may not have much to offer in return if they decide to trade Knox, as they are expected to have 10 total draft picks and needs on both sides of the ball.
Insiders speculate that the Bills may use their first-round pick to take a wide receiver, adding another reliable option after No. 1 pass-catcher Stefon Diggs ended the season on a major slump, failing to score a touchdown in his last seven games, the longest stretch of his career without a score.
