The New York Giants had a disappointing 2023 season and are in need of major offensive enhancements for the upcoming offseason. One potential option is exploring a trade for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has been rumored to be dissatisfied with his current team.
Despite Aiyuk’s undeniable talent and potential to be a top-tier receiver in the league, he has only averaged 6.5 targets per game this past season due to the 49ers’ offensive scheme. This could lead to San Francisco offering a significant contract extension exceeding $25 million per season to retain him, which raises the question of whether it is worth paying such a hefty price for a player who isn’t utilized as a primary option.
The Giants could benefit from acquiring Aiyuk as he has the ability to immediately become their No. 1 receiver and provide the offensive firepower they need. With a $14 million cap hit for the 2024 season, Aiyuk is an attractive option for the Giants. If he signs an extension, his deal could be backloaded, making his later cap hits closer to $30 million, which the Giants will be able to afford by then.
The Giants have effective cap space of around $14-$18 million, which could increase to up to $60 million through roster moves such as cutting guard Mark Glowinski and restructuring the contracts of Andrew Thomas and Dexter Lawrence. Financially, the Giants are prepared to afford Aiyuk, but the trade package they offer will ultimately be the deciding factor.
Joe Schoen, the Giants GM, previously made a big trade for WR Stefon Diggs while in Buffalo and may do the same to address the Giants’ need for a No. 1 receiver. However, the Giants are unlikely to part with their No. 6 overall pick, but they do have high second-round picks that could be valuable. One potential trade package could involve offering both their second-round picks (36th and 47th overall) and wide receiver Darius Slayton, who has been consistent but limited in production due to the team’s poor offensive play. Slayton could be a valuable asset for the 49ers as a reliable second option in their offense, and the Giants’ offer may appeal to them even though Aiyuk is considered more dynamic. It remains to be seen if the 49ers are open to trading Aiyuk, but acquiring him could elevate the Giants’ offense to new heights.
