For the second consecutive offseason, Buffalo Bills’ general manager, Brandon Beane, cautioned fans not to anticipate any extravagant signings in free agency due to the team’s financial constraints. However, an insider proposes that the Bills could acquire Derek Barnett, a former first-round defensive end who ended the 2023 season with exceptional performances, at a reasonable price. With the likelihood of losing several pivotal defensive players, the Bills are expected to seek assistance on the defensive line. According to Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, Barnett could be an ideal addition to the team.
In 2017, Barnett was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round. However, he only managed to average just over three sacks per season and was waived in November. Despite this setback, he was picked up on waivers by the Houston Texans, and finished the season strong, which could boost his prospects in free agency, according to Ballentine.
During the Texans’ playoff run, Barnett performed well, with 3.5 sacks, eight quarterback knockdowns, and 13 total pressures from Week 15 onwards. Despite his strong finish, Barnett’s history with the Eagles and a torn ACL in 2022 could make him a more affordable free agent.
Ballentine noted that although Barnett has had limited success as a pass-rusher, he is a reliable defender against the run and could be a valuable addition for teams looking for a cost-effective rotational player on the edge. The writer suggested that the Bills and Cleveland Browns may be interested in signing him.
The Bills are facing the departure of several key defensive players due to free agency, including the impressive Leonard Floyd who played as a standout defensive end. Despite being a bargain signing with a one-year contract worth $7 million in guaranteed money, Floyd had a career-best season with 10.5 sacks and 32 total tackles. However, Floyd has made it clear that he won’t be offering any discounts to stay in Buffalo for the upcoming season. He stated that he will follow the money wherever his agent feels they can get the best deal, acknowledging that football is a business.
