Prior to receiving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing substances policy, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had already caused annoyance among members of both the San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders. As a result, Garoppolo’s time with the Raiders is expected to come to an end after just one season.
It’s no secret that Garoppolo’s relationship with Shanahan deteriorated significantly after the 49ers drafted quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Ultimately, Shanahan replaced Garoppolo with rookie sensation Brock Purdy, who was the final choice of the 2022 draft.
One reason Garoppolo joined the Raiders last year was his familiarity with Ziegler and McDaniels from their time together with the New England Patriots. However, Garoppolo’s alleged aloofness and ongoing health issues have been a cause for concern.
Garoppolo’s poor performance and injury issues made it easy for then-Raiders interim head coach Antonio Pierce to give QB1 duties to 2023 fourth-round draft selection Aidan O’Connell for over half of the season. According to Pro Football Reference, had Garoppolo finished among qualified players, he would have ranked 30th in the NFL with a 77.7 passer rating, having thrown seven touchdown passes and nine interceptions across seven games.
