As the new season looms, the Buffalo Bills are sitting comfortably at almost $50 million below the salary cap. However, one insider predicts that the team may need to cut ties with their first pick under Sean McDermott’s leadership, in order to reduce their expenses. The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia has suggested that cornerback Tre’Davious White, who has suffered multiple severe injuries, may be released to free up significant cap space for the start of the new league year. White underwent a grueling ACL tear in 2021, and was then struck with a torn Achilles in 2023.
The potential cut of Bills’ $69 million cornerback, Tre’Davious White, is being discussed as the team looks to reduce their salary cap. White has suffered multiple major injuries, including a torn ACL and a torn Achilles, and cutting him could save the team over $6 million in cap space. However, the decision is complex and will ultimately be up to general manager Brandon Beane, who must determine if White can still perform at a high level. The team wants White to get healthy before making a final decision, but time may be running out as his roster bonus is due soon.
Despite a series of season-ending injuries, Beane emphasized that the team still highly regards White. During a press conference at the end of the season, Beane commended White’s diligent efforts to return from his 2021 injury and praised his performance before being struck with another unfortunate injury.
Beane did not suggest that the team was prepared to move on from White and expressed a desire to see him back on the field. However, the Bills general manager did not confirm whether White would return to a starting position, considering the impressive second season from Christian Benford and the excellent performance from trade-deadline acquisition Rasul Douglas.
Beane’s focus was on getting White healthy and back on the field, rather than determining the team’s starting corners for the next season. He acknowledged the team’s depth in that position but emphasized that a healthy Tre White is a valuable asset to the team.
