The New England Patriots are once again looking for a quarterback following Tom Brady’s retirement, aiming to find a long-term solution in the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite the optimism surrounding this year’s quarterback prospects, the Patriots are not as enthusiastic about one particular top player.
The Patriots won’t have the opportunity to choose the top quarterback prospects as the Chicago Bears are expected to select Caleb Williams first overall. Due to their win over the Denver Broncos, the Patriots hold the third pick in the draft, trailing the Washington Commanders.
This draft order may significantly impact the Patriots’ 2024 draft picks. New England will have to select from the remaining top three quarterbacks – after Williams, there’s Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels, with a perceived drop in talent and potential among the second-tier quarterbacks.
Consequently, the Patriots are considering trading down from the third pick and focusing on building a team around a veteran quarterback. There are rumors that this could become more likely if a specific quarterback remains available when the Patriots are on the clock.
Reports suggest that many scouts within the Patriots organization are not impressed with Maye. Despite meeting with teams at the NFL Combine, the North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback did not participate in drills or testing. Mixed opinions have emerged about Maye, with some clubs having varying perspectives on the 2022 ACC Player of the Year.
